Kenneth Stahl Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created by a gift from alum Ken Stahl, who graduated from the Department in 1980. He was a non-traditional-aged student and established this scholarship to encourage a student such as himself. The scholarship is given to a junior or senior in the Department with a high grade point average who the Department considers an outstanding student showing future promise and demonstrates financial need.
Gordon Hostettler Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship fund was established in the memory of Gordon Hostettler, who served as Chair of the Department from 1966 to 1975. The fund was created by many gifts from former students, friends, and family with large donations from his parents. The scholarship is awarded to a second-year graduate student who the Department considers outstanding.
John F. Corbin Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created by a gift from alum John Corbin, who graduated from the Department in 1974. He started a career in broadcasting, moved into banking, then to an oil investment firm. The scholarship is given annually to a junior or senior in the Department with a high grade point average who the Department considers outstanding.
The Communication Studies Fund provides general support to the Department and its activities, including support for student and faculty professional development and department special events.
Harris and Morrill Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in memory of two outstanding Colorado broadcasters—Dick Harris and John Morrill. Dick served as Station Manager for KOA-TV, and John was Executive Director of the Colorado Broadcasters Association for over a decade. Both men were strong supporters of broadcast education in the Department. This scholarship is given annually to an outstanding undergraduate student in the Department whose emphasis is media.
G. Jack Gravlee Endowment
This endowed fund was created in honor of G. Jack Gravlee upon leaving the Department in 2004. Dr. Gravlee came to CSU in 1964 and served as Chair from 1975 to 1990. His specialty was British Public Address. The fund provides discretionary support to the Department which is used for a lecture series to bring eminent communication scholars to campus for presentations and interaction with students and faculty.
Communication Studies Alumni Scholarship
This endowed scholarship started with a gift from alum and faculty member Ann Gill and grew with gifts from a large number of alumni including a very significant gift from alum Lee R. Smith. The Alumni scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Department with financial need who represents the spirit of the department by showing creativity in their chosen area of study and/or demonstrating promise of success.
James R. Irvine Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created in 1997 to honor Jim Irvine, a faculty member in the Department for thirty-two years, on his retirement. Jim served as Director of Graduate Study and taught rhetorical theory at the undergraduate and graduate level. The scholarship is awarded to students in the Department with a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and an interest and ability in rhetorical studies who are either seniors with interest in pursuing the M.A. or graduate students with interest in pursuing the Ph.D.
Robert K. MacLauchlin Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created to honor Bob MacLauchlin, who taught in the Department from 1969 to 1997. Dr. Mac’s specialty was broadcasting, and he was inducted into the Broadcasting Professionals of Colorado Hall of Fame in 2006. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior Communication Studies major who is committed to a career in the field of telecommunications or communication media, who maintains a minimum 2.7 GPA, demonstrates potential for leadership, and has worked diligently to prepare for future career success in a field of telecommunications or communication media.
Ann M. Gill Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created by a gift from Ann Gill, alum, long-time faculty member, and Department Chair from 1990-2001. The Gill Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate major who has completed at least 60 credits at Colorado State, has a cumulative grade point average of 2.9 or better, particularly outstanding oral and/or written communication skills, demonstrated creativity and initiative and demonstrated concern for human rights and equality.
Denny Phillips Scholarship
This scholarship was created to honor Dennis Phillips upon his retirement from the Department. Dr. Phillips came to CSU in 1972, taught in the areas of organizational communication and broadcasting, and served as Department Chair from 1995-2004 when he retired. Denny was selected as the first CSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor in 1996. The scholarship is awarded to a Communication Studies full-time undergraduate major who has completed at least 45 credits at CSU, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, with a range of extra-curricular activities at CSU.
Linda Cates Scholarship
The Linda Cates Scholarship was established to help non-traditional students in need of financial aid during their college years, in order to better their circumstances to live a successful, meaningful life. This scholarship "pays it forward" to future Communication Studies majors with a 3.2 GPA on behalf of all the professors and other students who helped Linda when she needed it.
Center for Public Deliberation
Dedicated to enhancing local democracy through improved public communication and community problem solving, CSU`s Center for Public Deliberation (CPD) serves as an impartial resource for the northern Colorado community. Deliberation requires safe places for citizens to come together, good and fair information to help structure the conversation, and skilled facilitators to guide the process. CSU students are trained to serve as facilitators and process experts, as well as complete the primary work of the Center. This fund supports activities, programs, and projects of the CPD in the Communication Studies Department.
