Dr. William Gray Memorial

Professor William Mason Gray, born in Detroit, Mich., in 1929, had a long and distinguished research and teaching career in the field of tropical meteorology.  After service as an Air Force weather forecast officer, Bill earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and joined the newly formed Colorado State University Department of Atmospheric Science in 1961, where he served on the faculty for more than four decades, retiring in 2005.  Bill remained very active in the field throughout his retirement.  He received many professional awards during his career, including the first Robert and Joanne Simpson Award in 2014.  Many of Bill's 70 M.S. and Ph.D. graduates have gone on to become leaders in the field of tropical meteorology, including the study of hurricanes.  This fund is intended to honor Bill's memory and his impact on the field by supporting graduate study and research in tropical meteorology in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University.
