This memorial scholarship was established to honor the life and the love of life of Matthew Hammerdorfer. The 17 year old Poudre High School junior died of sudden cardiac arrest on March 5, 2011. Matt was born with physical heart defects that were complicated and life threatening and resulted in several surgeries.
Matthew truly lived the phrase "carpe diem" by embracing opportunities, dreaming big and being a kind and caring individual. Matt played sports with a passion and excelled at them; rugby and soccer as well as other sports. He challenged himself in academics, which did not come as easily to him, by taking hard classes that interested him and succeeding in earning a high grade point average. He loved music, particularly reggae and camping with his friends.
He was a young man who loved history, who cared for the sufferings of the world, and who aspired to do something about it. In planning his college experience, where he expected to play rugby, Matthew also intended to follow in the footsteps of his parents and join the Peace Corps. He looked forward to continued travels, especially to Africa.
The lessons to impart from Matthew's brief life simply are to seize the day, play music, dance, enjoy the companionship of friends and family, run, ride, climb higher, and feel the life that is around us.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships to benefit graduate students enrolled in the Global Social Sustainable Enterprise (GSSE) Master's degree program within the College of Business at Colorado State University.
