Founded in 1986, the
Mycobacteria Research Laboratories is an internationally recognized
research and training center within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology,
and Pathology at Colorado State University. The MRL houses more than 110 faculty and
research staff, making it one of the largest groups in the world dedicated to
mycobacteria research. The center primarily conducts research related to
tuberculosis, leprosy, and other mycobacterial infections. Tuberculosis occurs
in every part of the world and is the second-leading cause of death due to an
infectious disease after COVID-19. Unfortunately, the only vaccine available is
more than 100 years old and does not prevent primary infection or, more
importantly, community spread.
Your gift to the MRL Initiatives fund supports
scientific discovery as our faculty and researchers work to develop vaccines
and treatments for these deadly diseases.
