Dr. David Van Metre Memorial Scholarship

David Copley Van Metre, D.V.M., DACVIM, was a livestock veterinarian and faculty member at the Colorado State University James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital for 20 years. He was born in Salina, Kan., on March 5, 1964. He graduated from Omaha Central High in 1982. He was a graduate of Cornell University, where he was an academic all-American football player. He earned his D.V.M. from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. His academic training included UC Davis, Washington State University, and Kansas State University before coming to Colorado State.

In 2016, CSU veterinary students voted to give Dr. Van Metre the 2016 Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teaching Award, presented to a faculty member for providing outstanding veterinary education. He earned the award three times throughout his career. In an article about lambing at a Wyoming ranch, Van Metre spoke of his hopes for his students: "They know more than they think they know. That's the most rewarding thing for me." He was a gifted teacher and veterinarian, a beloved mentor, and a man of strength, wisdom, and kindness. He remained humble and kind despite his many achievements. His greatest joy came at home with his wife and their two boys. He was a very committed and involved father and took great joy in watching his boys' athletic and other accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Robin Van Metre; two sons, Aaron and Joe; his father, David Ure Van Metre; and his brother, James. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Van Metre.
